Structure and WP interaction

DownToTen is structured along six main work-packages:

  • At first WP2 will focus on the definition of key particle properties, emission and measurement conditions and will identify the available instruments and sampling set-ups for both laboratory and on-road measurements. Target is to define solid (or non-volatile) particles, volatile particles and secondary organic aerosol potential;

  • At the next steps, in WP3 preliminary testing will be conducted in order to evaluate sampling conditions, measurement set-ups and appropriate test protocols; the evaluation will address both sampling techniques (thermal and catalytic treatment, CVS vs. raw exhaust, particle volatility etc.) and measurement instruments of different principles and designs (particle counters, electrical detection, photoacoustic sensors etc.). Moreover, modelling along the exhaust pipe, the sampling and dilution processes will be conducted for the understanding of the relationship between raw (tailpipe) and diluted (CVS) sampling;

  • WP4’s first target is the development of a comprehensive test matrix and of the necessary test protocols for several alternative technologies incl. GDI, hybrids, different GPF and DeNOx systems, as well as fuels and driving patterns. Then the defined tests will be conducted following a unified protocol and with a balanced distribution of the tasks among partners. It will be attempted to test as many new vehicles coming from the vertical technology projects as possible. WP4’s main challenge is real driving emissions: therefore, based on the suggestions of the previous WPs, it will also come up with a PN-PEMS demonstrator to be used in the measurement campaign, as well as a set-up to simulate robustness checks (vibrations, accelerations etc.) in the laboratory;

  • Finally in WP5 the results and the recommendations of the project will be synthesised. The results will include a sampling and measurement methodology proposal, a database with the developed emission factors and description of simulation models and tools. The recommendations will address issues on the relevance of our findings for atmospheric effects, discussion of effective emission control with respect to sub 23 nm particles, as well as topics on metrology implications;

  • DownToTen’s WP6 is dedicated to the dissemination of the results, including considerations concerning the potential future evolution towards challenging but feasible and sustainable emission targets;

  • Finally, WP1 led by LAT/AUTh, will be devoted to the project management.
